Sleep Issues in Perimenopausal Women
|
| Featuring: Veronica Ravnikar, MD, Kin Yuen, MD, Rafael Pelayo, MD
Perimenopausal sleep complaints remain under treated despite their high prevalence.
It is believed that these disturbances are caused by estrogen withdrawal and accompanying
symptoms like hot flashes. Unfortunately, there is a lack of clinical studies clearly
demonstrating that these disturbances are directly caused by estrogen withdrawal vs.
the affects of aging.

Sleep Disturbances in Reproductive Women
|
| Featuring: Veronica Ravnikar, MD, Kin Yuen, MD, Rafael Pelayo, MD
In the United States, sleep deprivation in women has reached epidemic proportions and is more
common in women than men. According to the National Sleep Foundation, over one half of women
suffer from sleep deprivation. This is mostly observed during the workweek. A 2002 National
Sleep foundation survey of all adults revealed that women are more likely than men to have
difficulty falling and staying asleep and to experience more daytime sleepiness at least a
few nights/days a week.

Sleep in the Pediatric Population
|
| Featuring: Christopher Earley, MBBCh, PhD, Jodi Mindell, PhD , Rafael Pelayo, MD
Primary care specialists often encounter patients who complain of disturbed
sleep. This program reviews the current management of sleep disturbances. Some
of the key clinical issues that are reviewed are working up a patient with sleep
disturbances, approaching patients who self medicate, and when to consider
referring a patient to a sleep specialist. The concept of sleep maintenance and
methods for attaining it are described.
